In practice for 40 years I have a friendly, laid back approach that encourages clients to share openly about their concerns. In the first few sessions I find it of utmost value to cover some key concerns:
Stabilization (anxiety/depression, intensity, when started?)
Coping skills (How is the person dealing with emotional, mental and physical stress?)
Family background (What important issues occurred that still impact the individual?)
I then use techniques and resources that will help clients manage, solve and restore the issues. I enjoy treating faith-based individuals, but I also see a number of a-religious people.
